48th Sheffield Music Festival & Garden Walk set for July 23-24

Mark your calendar for the 48th Annual Sheffield Music Festival & Garden Walk on July 23-24,  2016, featuring more than 80 Sheffield neighborhood gardens open for your enjoyment.

The wide array of urban gardens in our neighborhood has earned Sheffield the prestigious title of “Garden District of Chicago.”  We encourage everyone to support the neighborhood and display their gardens this year, whether an entire plot, just the front, side, deck, or backyard. To include your garden, please fill out the participation form which can be downloaded from the SNA website, www.sheffieldgardenwalk.com.  For more information, please contact Garden Search Manager Laury Lewis at lbl1948@yahoo.com.  The deadline to submit gardens is June 15. Additionally, there will be special informative garden tours of select gardens given by gardening experts.

The Sheffield Neighborhood Association has again partnered with Special Events Management of Chicago to produce this year’s festival. There will be many new events added to the festival. The 3rd Annual Chicago Craft Beer Festival will be held in the St. Vincent DePaul Church parking lot on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 11:30 am to 4 pm. Admission will be $35, which will include 15 3-oz. tastings from over 75 varieties of craft beer. Please visit www.chicagoevents.com for more information.

The food/beverage offerings from local establishments will include a diverse variety of choices to please everyone’s palette.  The restaurants will be announced in the July/August issue of this newsletter.  Of course, St. Vincent DePaul Church will offer its fine selection of hot dogs, hamburgers/cheeseburgers, brats and pretzels, in the church parking lot.  Budweiser will be our major festival sponsor this year, featuring Bud Light and a selection of its craft beers.

Kids’ Corner will be expanded on Belden and filled with family attractions, as always: a giant slide, a reptile petting area, a variety of fun rides, a talent show, and musical and theatrical performances on the Kenmore Stage. Home Depot will provide hands-on activities and Lakeshore Sports and Fitness will demonstrate fun physical activities for kids. Daily “All Access Kids’ Corner” wristbands will be available for purchase.

As many people might not be aware, portions of the Sheffield Neighborhood are registered as a national historical district, including four Chicago landmark districts. Polly Kelly, a long-time Sheffield resident and business owner and Garden Walk co-founder, will organize guided architectural tours. These tours are very popular and fill up every year. The tours will provide an appreciation of our neighborhood’s rich architectural and historical heritage. If you would like to help Polly lead a tour, please contact her at 773-472-8380 or e-mail her at jpk2200@sbcglobal.net. Polly will provide the training as well as a detailed script. Additionally, the historic St. Vincent DePaul Church will provide guided tours on Saturday and Sunday of areas within the Church.

The musical entertainment will again be the highlight of musical festivals in Chicago this summer. We have added a second stage on Sheffield, north of Belden, to provide continuous music entertainment.  The Saturday and Sunday headline entertainment and the Second Stage Band Line-up highlights will be featured in the July/August issue of SNN.  In the meantime, check our website at www.sheffieldgardenwalk.com or www.chicagoevents.com for updates.

Sponsorships and advertising are available. As a sponsor, your business will benefit from appearing on the official Sheffield Music Festival & Garden Walk poster and postcard, in our ads seen throughout Chicago, and on the Garden Walk website. For more sponsorship information, please contact Crini McCarthy at cmccarthy@chicagoevents.com.  In addition, advertising opportunities are available in the Garden Walk guidebook, which reaches neighborhood residents and thousands of attendees from beyond our boundaries. Please contact out advertising manager, Karyn Serota, karyn@chicagoevents.com, for pricing and more information.

The suggested donation at all entrances of the Festival will be $7 from noon to 3 pm and $10 from 3 pm to 10 pm on both days. Gardens will be open from noon to 5:30 pm both days and Kids’ Corner will be open from noon to 7 pm both days.

The Sheffield Neighborhood Association is pleased to bring you another fine neighborhood event that funds the SNA and contributes significantly to neighborhood beautification, local parks, local schools, and many other neighborhood charities and service organizations.   Thank you for your support.

Laury Lewis and Patty Hayes co-chair SNA’s Music Festival & Garden Walk Committee.
